Bukit Bintang is the closest KL gets to a walkable core. Malls, hawker streets, the monorail and MRT, and a large stock of short-term serviced apartments are all packed into a small area, and Jalan Alor's food street runs every night. It is loud and touristy in parts, and the buildings vary wildly in quality, but for a first month it removes every logistical problem at once.

You will meet more expat professionals than transient nomads, which suits people looking for a base rather than a stopover.

Low violent crime. Snatch theft is the main issue; keep bags on the inside of the pavement and avoid using your phone at the kerb.

The LRT, MRT and monorail network is good and expanding, though interchanges often involve long covered walks. Grab is cheap and heavily used. Pavements are inconsistent and pedestrian crossings are scarce, so most people default to ride-hailing for anything over a few hundred metres.

Hot and humid year-round with almost no seasonal variation. Afternoon thunderstorms are the daily rhythm.
