About

Chania is Crete's most charming town, with a Venetian harbour, an old town of narrow lanes and beaches within a short drive. Unlike many islands, it is a real town that keeps working in winter, with shops, a university and an airport. Summers bring crowds and higher prices; the rest of the year is calm, mild and good value. A car opens up the gorges, beaches and mountain villages of western Crete.

Key points

  • A real town that stays open in winter, with an airport and services

  • Some of Crete's best beaches and gorges within a short drive

  • Mild winters compared with mainland Greece

Neighbourhoods

The old town and harbour are beautiful but busy and expensive in summer. Neighbourhoods such as Nea Chora, Halepa and Koum Kapi offer residential calm near the sea, and villages around the city have more space but require a car.

Rents rise strongly in summer, but long-term leases outside the high season are reasonable. Fresh local food is cheap and excellent.
