Da Nang is the best-balanced destination in Vietnam and arguably the best value beach city in the world. You get 30 kilometres of coastline, a modern city with hospitals and malls behind it, an international airport ten minutes from the centre, and serviced apartments with a sea view for USD 400. The nomad community concentrates in An Thuong, a walkable grid of cafes and coworking a block from My Khe beach, and it is large enough to be social without being overwhelming. Hoi An is 40 minutes south and the Hai Van Pass is on the doorstep. The catches are a flooding season in October and November, and a city that is functional rather than charming.

An Thuong, the grid between My Khe beach and Ngu Hanh Son road, is the nomad centre: walkable, full of cafes, western food and coworking, and one street back from the sand. My An and Bac My An extend the same character slightly further out at lower rents. Hai Chau across the river is the actual city centre, with local markets, the best Vietnamese food and no beach. Son Tra, on the peninsula, offers quiet and views for people willing to ride.

Probably the best cost-to-quality ratio of any coastal city anywhere. USD 450 buys a serviced one-bedroom with weekly cleaning, utilities, fibre and a pool, five minutes from the beach.

Fibre at USD 8-12 a month is standard and included in most serviced apartments. Cafe Wi-Fi is excellent as a matter of course. Undersea cable faults occasionally slow international traffic for days.

Large enough to be social, small enough that you keep seeing the same faces.

Safer and calmer than Vietnam's two big cities, with much less bag snatching. Road accidents remain the main risk.

An Thuong is walkable; everything else needs a scooter at USD 55 a month or a Grab bike at under USD 1.50 a trip. The airport being ten minutes from the centre is a genuine daily advantage over most beach cities.

Tropical monsoon

February to May is the sweet spot: warm, dry and swimmable. The autumn flood season is severe enough that many long-stayers plan to be elsewhere.
