Hoi An offers a rare three-way combination: a beautiful historic centre, quiet rice-field neighborhoods and a real beach within cycling distance. Remote workers settle in Cam Chau, Cam Thanh or near An Bang, where monthly villas, cafes and a small but close community support a relaxed routine. Da Nang's airport and larger-city services are roughly forty minutes away, which makes Hoi An more practical than its scale suggests. The compromises are seasonal flooding, limited local healthcare, tourist crowds in the Ancient Town and an economy that can feel narrowly focused on visitors. It is ideal for a one-to-three-month creative retreat, especially if you want to cycle, surf or work from a garden rather than chase big-city networking.

Cam Chau is the most balanced long-stay base, halfway between town and beach with villas overlooking rice fields. Cam Thanh is greener and quieter but more dependent on a scooter. An Bang and Cam An put the beach, surf and western cafes at your door, with higher seasonal rents and more construction. The Ancient Town and Minh An are magical for short stays but noisy, crowded and vulnerable to flooding. Tra Que offers rural calm close to both An Bang and town. Cua Dai has large resorts and a quieter beach strip but less community density.

Direct monthly villa rentals are excellent value, especially from February to May. An Bang beach houses and heritage-centre stays command a premium. Cycling keeps transport costs close to zero if you choose Cam Chau or Tra Que.

Fibre is widely available in villas and cafes, though rural properties may share a consumer router across several rooms. Test video calls before committing and keep mobile data ready during storms. International cable faults affect Hoi An along with the rest of Vietnam.

Friendly and intimate rather than professionally dense; Da Nang provides the larger nearby network.

Personal security is strong. Traffic on the main Da Nang road, poorly lit rural lanes, flooding and swimming during rough-sea warnings are the main risks.

The flat core is unusually bike-friendly by regional standards, and a bicycle handles most trips from Cam Chau or Tra Que. A scooter is useful for An Bang, Cua Dai and Da Nang. Ride-hailing coverage is adequate but thinner late at night.

Tropical monsoon coastal

February through May is the ideal window for cycling and beach time. Summer is hot but workable near the coast. Autumn flooding is a real planning constraint, not a minor inconvenience.
