Koh Phangan has evolved from a backpacker party stop into one of Southeast Asia's most established island bases for remote workers. The west coast around Srithanu concentrates coworking, yoga, healthy food and long-stay villas, while Thong Sala provides practical services and the north and east coasts remain quieter. Internet is good enough for daily calls in the main settlements, but power cuts and weak connections in isolated villas still make a mobile backup essential. The island rewards scooter-confident nomads who want community and nature; it is a poor fit for anyone who needs city-scale healthcare, public transport or frictionless logistics.

Srithanu and Hin Kong on the west coast are the default remote-work base, with coworking, wellness studios, sunset bars and the island's densest expat network. Thong Sala is more practical and local, close to the main pier, supermarkets and hospital. Baan Tai is convenient for nightlife and access to both coasts but has more traffic and event noise. Haad Rin is party-oriented and isolated from everyday services. Chaloklum in the north is quieter and better for diving and village life, while the east-coast bays are beautiful but remote and less reliable for work.

Housing is the swing factor. Simple bungalows remain affordable on direct monthly deals, while modern villas around Srithanu rise sharply from December through March. Imported food, taxis and ferry trips make island life more expensive than Chiang Mai.

Fibre is common around Srithanu, Hin Kong, Thong Sala and Baan Tai, but a listing that says Wi-Fi may still use an overloaded shared line. Test the exact villa and keep an AIS or True hotspot available for power and router outages. Remote bays have weaker mobile coverage.

Violent crime affecting visitors is uncommon. Scooter crashes, poor lighting, steep roads and impaired riding after parties are the material risks. Avoid swimming or taking small boats in rough monsoon conditions.

There is no airport. Most arrivals connect through Koh Samui or Surat Thani and continue by ferry to Thong Sala. Songthaews and taxis are expensive for daily use, so most residents rent a scooter. Roads are steep and dark outside the main settlements.

Tropical monsoon island

January to April brings the most dependable beach weather. Rain falls in short bursts through much of the year, but late-autumn monsoon systems can produce days of heavy rain, flooding and rough ferry crossings.
