Abu Dhabi offers most of what draws people to the UAE without Dubai's intensity or its rents. It is the federal capital, cleaner and more orderly, with wide corniches, good beaches and a cultural investment programme that produced the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Saadiyat Island's museum district. Rents run roughly 20-30% below Dubai for equivalent apartments, and the Hub71 programme actively courts startups with incentives. The trade-off is a smaller social scene, less nightlife, and a slower pace that suits families and settled professionals more than people looking for a network to plug into. Dubai is 90 minutes up the road when you need it.

Al Reem Island is the modern high-rise choice, with newer towers, waterfront walkways and a large expat population. The Corniche and Al Markaziyah form the older central district, denser and cheaper with better everyday shopping. Saadiyat Island holds the museums, the best beaches and the highest prices. Khalifa City and Al Raha are the suburban family areas near the airport, with villas and international schools.

Meaningfully cheaper than Dubai on rent, which is the dominant cost. Annual cheque payment for rent is standard here too, so budget the first-year cash requirement.

Same infrastructure and pricing as Dubai: world-leading speeds at high prices, with certain voice and video calling services restricted.

Better for people who want a settled base than for those looking to plug into a scene quickly.

Crime is close to non-existent. The genuine risks are legal rather than criminal, and the same drug, debt and public-conduct rules apply as elsewhere in the UAE.

There is no metro; buses and taxis cover the city and taxis are cheaper than in Dubai. The central island around the Corniche is walkable in winter; everywhere else needs a car or ride-hailing. Dubai is 90 minutes by road.

Hot desert

Winter is excellent, with the corniche and beaches genuinely usable. Summer is the same as Dubai: indoors, with air conditioning.
