Busan is the rare large Asian city where you can swim in the morning, hike a mountain in the afternoon and still have gigabit fibre and a subway. It sits along a coastline rather than in a grid, so the city is a chain of distinct neighbourhoods separated by hills, and the beaches at Haeundae and Gwangalli are genuinely good rather than merely present. Rents run well below Seoul, the seafood is the country's best, and the climate is milder in winter. The trade-offs are a much smaller foreign community, less English than Seoul, and a slower pace that some find restful and others find limiting.

Haeundae is the beach-and-towers district, the most international part of the city and the most expensive. Gwangalli offers a similar beach with more cafes, a younger crowd and better value. Seomyeon is the commercial centre, dense and well connected but with no sea view. Nampo-dong and the old port area near Jagalchi market have the most character and the cheapest rents. Centum City sits between Haeundae and the centre and is where the business and film industry cluster.

Meaningfully cheaper than Seoul, particularly on rent. Deposits are still the barrier: even monthly wolse arrangements typically want USD 4,000-15,000 up front.

Identical infrastructure to Seoul: gigabit as standard, free public Wi-Fi on transit and in public spaces, and cafes designed for laptop work.

Expect to build your own social life. This is not a city with an existing nomad scene to join.

Street crime is close to non-existent. Typhoons occasionally hit the coast between August and September.

Four subway lines plus a light rail cover the city, and a T-money card works on everything. KTX reaches Seoul in under three hours, and a ferry crosses to Fukuoka in about three.

Milder than Seoul year-round thanks to the coast, with winters that rarely go far below freezing and a genuine beach summer.
