The Old City is a literal square, bounded by a moat and the remains of a 700-year-old wall, packed with temples, small guesthouses, massage shops and street food. It is the most atmospheric part of Chiang Mai and the most touristed, which shows in the number of banana-pancake restaurants near Tha Phae Gate. For a nomad it works well if you value walking everywhere and living among something older than a condo tower, and less well if you want a gym, a pool and a lift.
