Deira and Bur Dubai are what existed before the towers. Gold and spice souks, wooden abra boats crossing the creek for a few cents, South Asian restaurants that have been there for decades, and rents that run around half of the Marina's. The buildings are older and there is no beach, but this is where you find a version of Dubai that is lived in rather than staged. Both are well served by the metro and close to the airport.

Old Dubai: dense, working and genuinely characterful.

The clearest way to make Dubai affordable. A one-bedroom here costs less than a studio in the Marina.

Speeds are world-leading and prices are correspondingly high, with home fibre at AED 350-500 a month. Some voice and video calling services remain restricted, so most residents keep a VPN running as routine.

Around 88% of residents are foreign-born, so being an outsider is the default rather than the exception.

Street crime is close to non-existent. The real risks are legal: drug possession, public intoxication, online defamation and unpaid debt all carry consequences that surprise Western residents.

The metro is clean, driverless and cheap but serves a single spine, so most journeys still end in a taxi. The city is built for cars: crossing a six-lane road on foot is often impossible and walking outdoors is unpleasant for half the year.

Hot desert

Winter is close to perfect and the whole city moves outdoors. Summer humidity on the coast pushes the heat index past 50C.
