About

District 1 holds the business core, the colonial-era architecture, most of the coworking, and the widest choice of serviced apartments in the city. Everything is within a short Grab ride, the cafe density is extraordinary, and the nightlife runs from rooftop bars to Bui Vien's backpacker chaos. It is the most expensive district in Vietnam and the loudest, but for a first stay it puts everything within reach.

Meeting people

The most business-focused community in Vietnam, weighted toward e-commerce, manufacturing sourcing, agencies and startups. Events are frequent and well-attended, particularly around District 1 and Thao Dien.

Larger and more entrepreneurial than Da Nang, less tight-knit. Easy to find business contacts, harder to find a social circle quickly.

Common scams

  • Bag and phone snatching from moving motorbikes

  • Taxi meters running fast outside Grab

  • Motorbike rental damage claims and passport retention

  • Shoe-shine and street-vendor pressure sales in District 1

Women travellers

Generally comfortable, with the same snatch-theft precautions that apply to everyone.

LGBTQ+

Legal, and the city has the most visible scene in Vietnam. No marriage recognition.

Violent crime is rare, but snatch theft is genuinely common: keep your phone away from the roadside, never use it while walking near traffic, and never leave your passport as a rental deposit.

Public system

Public hospitals are crowded and rarely used by foreigners except in emergencies.

Private care

FV Hospital and Family Medical Practice provide competent English-language care at moderate prices. Standards sit below Thailand or Malaysia, and complex cases are commonly referred to Bangkok or Singapore.

Insurance

Get evacuation cover to Bangkok or Singapore and confirm motorbike riding is included, since it is how most people get around and how most claims arise.

Grab bikes are the default and cost under USD 2 across town. Xanh SM's electric taxis are a quiet, comfortable upgrade. The first metro line has opened but coverage is limited. Crossing the road on foot means walking slowly and predictably rather than waiting for a gap.
