Saigon, as almost everyone still calls it, is the most commercially energetic city in Southeast Asia relative to its cost. Serviced apartments with cleaning and utilities included go for USD 450, fibre is USD 10 a month, coffee culture is world-class, and the business community is genuinely active in manufacturing sourcing, e-commerce and agencies. It is louder and hotter than Hanoi and considerably more open to outsiders. The costs are air quality that is consistently poor, traffic that operates on its own physics, and a bag-snatching problem serious enough that locals will tell you about it unprompted.

District 1 is the centre: the widest choice of serviced apartments, most of the coworking, and everything within a short ride, at the highest prices. Thao Dien in District 2 is the expat enclave, leafy and quiet with international schools, western restaurants and a suburban feel that some love and others find isolating. Binh Thanh, between the two, is the value pick with rapid development around Landmark 81. District 3 is more local, with tree-lined streets, French-era architecture and good food at lower prices. District 7 and Phu My Hung are planned, orderly and popular with families.

The serviced apartment market is the real advantage: USD 500 typically gets a furnished studio with weekly cleaning, utilities, internet and a security desk, with none of the deposit games common elsewhere in Asia.

Fibre is USD 8-12 a month and included in most serviced apartments. Every cafe has strong free Wi-Fi as a default. Undersea cable faults periodically slow international traffic for days at a time.

Larger and more entrepreneurial than Da Nang, less tight-knit. Easy to find business contacts, harder to find a social circle quickly.

Violent crime is rare, but snatch theft is genuinely common: keep your phone away from the roadside, never use it while walking near traffic, and never leave your passport as a rental deposit.

Grab bikes are the default and cost under USD 2 across town. Xanh SM's electric taxis are a quiet, comfortable upgrade. The first metro line has opened but coverage is limited. Crossing the road on foot means walking slowly and predictably rather than waiting for a gap.
