Kaohsiung has remade its industrial waterfront into one of Taiwan's most liveable urban landscapes. The harbour light rail, Pier-2 art district and broad cycle paths give the centre space that Taipei lacks, while rents can be a third lower. Winter is warm and dry, the airport sits on the metro, and high-speed rail reaches Taipei in roughly ninety minutes. The city is a strong fit for independent workers who prefer a local rhythm over a ready-made nomad bubble. Its weaknesses are summer heat, poorer winter air, a smaller English-speaking community and neighbourhoods that can feel spread out beyond the MRT corridors.

Yancheng is the creative first choice, beside Pier-2 and the harbour light rail, with older apartments and converted warehouses. Gushan around the waterfront and Sizihwan adds sea views, university energy and Monkey Mountain trails. Lingya and Sanduo are more central and modern, close to offices and shopping. Zuoying is practical for high-speed rail and Lotus Pond but less atmospheric. The Asia New Bay Area offers new towers and waterfront parks at a premium. Staying within a short walk of MRT or light rail matters more here than in compact Taipei.

Kaohsiung is one of the best-value large cities in developed East Asia, especially for renters willing to sign a local contract.

Modern towers and most renovated apartments have excellent fibre. Mobile coverage is strong across the urban core.

Best for self-directed workers who want integration and value rather than a dense nomad circuit.

Scooter traffic requires care at crossings. Follow heat, typhoon and air-quality alerts.

MRT and light rail cover the main centre and harbour; YouBike handles short trips. Zuoying HSR station connects north, while outer districts remain scooter-heavy.
