Taiwan combines Japanese-grade convenience with a warmer, cheaper and notably more relaxed daily rhythm. Fibre and mobile coverage are excellent, rail links every major city, healthcare is strong, and street food makes living well inexpensive. Taipei has the deepest international community, while Kaohsiung and Tainan trade some English access for lower rent, sunnier winters and a more local pace. The formal digital nomad visa launched in 2025 and, under the foreign-professional reforms effective in 2026, can support extensions toward a two-year total stay. The real cautions are humid summers, typhoons, earthquakes, air pollution in the industrial west and the geopolitical risk that sits behind otherwise exceptionally normal life.

Taipei drives the national averages upward. Kaohsiung and Tainan offer significantly more space for the same rent, while convenience-store meals, night markets and public transport remain inexpensive everywhere.

Apartment fibre commonly reaches 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps, and unlimited mobile plans are inexpensive. Chunghwa has the broadest rural coverage; urban performance is strong across all three major networks.

The international community is more long-term and professionally rooted than the transient scenes in Bali or Thailand.

Street crime is rare. Traffic, earthquakes and typhoons are more realistic risks than interpersonal violence.

High-speed rail links Taipei and Kaohsiung in about 90 minutes, with conventional rail filling the gaps. EasyCard and iPass work across metros, buses, local rail and bike share.

Subtropical in the north, tropical in the south

Winters are mild, though Taipei can feel damp and grey. Summers are intensely humid across the island and hotter in the south.

Visa-exempt stays range from 14 to 90 days by passport. Since October 2025 all arrivals must submit the Taiwan Arrival Card online within seven days before arrival. The dedicated digital nomad visa is available only to nationals of visa-exempt countries and can be requested abroad or, subject to timing rules, after eligible entry in Taiwan.
