Taipei is one of Asia's easiest cities to live in without feeling designed for foreigners. The metro is clean and comprehensive, YouBike fills the last kilometre, fibre is standard, and a full meal can still cost less than a coffee in many Western capitals. The city is dense but rarely aggressive: temple lanes, riverside paths and forested mountains interrupt the towers. Da'an and Zhongshan offer the easiest first base, Xinyi supplies corporate polish, and Wanhua or the older west side offer more texture at lower prices. The trade-offs are damp winters, punishing summer humidity, small apartments and rent that is substantially higher than in southern Taiwan.

Da'an is the most balanced first base: central, green, well connected and full of cafes, but expensive. Zhongshan mixes Japanese-era lanes, design shops and nightlife with excellent metro access. Xinyi is polished and tower-heavy, convenient for corporate work and nightlife but short on neighbourhood intimacy. Songshan and Minsheng Community are quieter and more residential. Wanhua and Datong offer older architecture, markets and lower rent, though less English. Beitou suits hot-spring and hiking access but adds a commute. New Taipei areas such as Banqiao and Yonghe are often better-value choices while remaining on the metro.

Rent is the only major pressure point. Local breakfasts, noodle shops, metro trips and healthcare remain excellent value.

Fibre is routine in apartment buildings and 5G is dense. Confirm the exact router and wired speed in older walk-ups before booking a month.

English is workable in central districts, but basic Mandarin unlocks apartment hunting and local friendships.

Traffic at unsignalised crossings is the most persistent everyday risk. Stand clear of building facades and follow alerts during earthquakes.

The MRT, dense buses and YouBike cover nearly every daily trip. EasyCard handles all three. Taxis are safe and reasonably priced.

Autumn is superb. Winter temperatures are mild but damp indoor conditions can feel colder than the thermometer suggests.
