Lombok trades Bali's density and convenience for open coast, mountain landscapes and a smaller, more grounded community. Most remote workers base themselves in Kuta on the south coast, where coworking, gyms, restaurants and modern villas have expanded around world-class surf beaches. Senggigi provides mature resort infrastructure near Mataram, while the Gili islands suit shorter car-free stays but have less reliable power and healthcare. Costs remain attractive by Indonesian island standards, although prime south-coast rents are rising. Lombok works best for scooter-confident nomads who can tolerate uneven infrastructure and want outdoor life to structure their week.

Kuta Lombok is the clear remote-work centre, with coworking, gyms, restaurants and easy airport access. The lanes north of town offer newer villas and quieter nights, while central Kuta is walkable but dusty and construction-heavy. Selong Belanak is a beautiful, slower beach base with limited work infrastructure. Gerupuk suits committed surfers but is isolated. Senggigi on the west coast has established hotels, supermarkets and access to Mataram, yet a thinner nomad network. The Gili islands are social and car-free, but power, internet and medical access make them better for short stays than critical work periods. Sembalun is a mountain retreat, not a practical everyday base.

Local food and direct villa leases remain good value. Kuta's premium cafes, surf transport and newly built pool villas push costs toward Bali levels, while remote areas save rent but add transport and connectivity friction.

Kuta's modern villas and coworking spaces often have fibre, but many guesthouses still rely on shared connections. Telkomsel has the broadest mobile coverage. Remote beaches, mountain valleys and the Gilis are less predictable, especially during storms or power cuts.

Serious crime affecting visitors is uncommon, but road crashes, theft from scooters, strong surf and under-regulated adventure activities require care. Respect local customs, especially during Ramadan and outside resort zones.

Central Kuta is partly walkable, but beaches and villas are spread across long roads. Scooter rental is the norm; app-based rides are less consistent outside Mataram and the airport corridor. Boats link the west coast with Bali and the Gilis.

South Lombok is drier than much of Bali. The May-September dry season brings reliable beach weather and cooler evenings, while exposed landscapes become brown late in the season. Mountain weather around Rinjani changes quickly.
