Silom and Sathorn are where Bangkok actually works. Banks, law firms, embassies and the head offices of most of the country's large companies sit here, which means excellent transit, serious coworking, and a lunchtime street-food scene that is among the best in the city. It empties out at weekends, which some people find eerie and others find restful. Lumphini Park at the eastern end is the closest thing central Bangkok has to a proper green lung, and Silom Soi 2 and 4 anchor the city's LGBTQ nightlife.

Bangkok has separate scenes rather than one: agency and e-commerce operators cluster in Thonglor, the startup and VC crowd around Ploenchit and Samyan, and crypto everywhere. Weekly run clubs and Sunday football are the easiest ways in.

The BTS Skytrain and MRT subway cover the central corridor well and run until around midnight. Motorbike taxis at the mouth of every soi are the fastest way to cover the last kilometre. Pavements are narrow, obstructed and frequently non-existent.
