Ubud sits an hour inland from the coast in the middle of terraced rice fields and river gorges, and it attracts a noticeably different crowd from Canggu. The pace is slower, the wellness industry is enormous, and the people who stay tend to be writing, building something solo, or recovering from having done too much of Canggu. Outpost's Ubud location and a handful of cafes provide the working infrastructure, which is adequate rather than abundant. It is cooler than the coast, greener, cheaper, and considerably less social. The main frictions are the tourist congestion in the centre and the fact that the nearest good hospital is in Denpasar.

The centre around Monkey Forest Road and Jalan Raya is convenient and crowded. Penestanan, up the steps to the west, is the long-stay favourite: quiet, artistic and walkable to the centre. Nyuh Kuning south of the Monkey Forest is calmer and family-friendly. Further out, Tegallalang and Sayan offer villas with gorge views at the cost of needing a scooter for everything.

Cheaper than Canggu across the board, with the biggest gap in rent. Yoga and wellness packages are the category where Ubud costs more than you expect.

Biznet fibre covers the town and much of Penestanan. Villas further out often run on shared connections. Power cuts are more frequent than on the coast.

Easy to find your people if you engage with the yoga and coworking circuit, harder if you do not.

Very low crime. The monkeys near the Monkey Forest do steal phones and sunglasses, which is a genuine rather than a joke warning.

The centre is walkable, everything else needs a scooter. Local driver arrangements block app pickups in parts of the centre, so expect to walk a block to meet a Gojek.

A few degrees cooler than Canggu and considerably greener, with nights that occasionally need a blanket.
