Batu Bolong is what people picture when they say Canggu. The beach with the surf school, the cafe strip along the main road, Tropical Nomad a few minutes away, and enough within walking distance that you can occasionally leave the scooter. It is crowded, and the rice fields that made it beautiful are mostly gone, but it remains the social heart and the easiest place to land as a newcomer.

Slightly cheaper than Berawa, with older buildings. Warungs a street back from the main strip cost a third of the cafe prices.

Biznet fibre is good where installed, typically 50-200 Mbps. Many villas advertise fibre but run a shared 4G router, so test before committing. Power cuts of an hour or two happen most weeks, which is why coworking spaces with generators are popular.

Extremely easy to meet people, harder to keep them: the average stay is measured in weeks.

Theft from unlocked villas and scooter accidents are the realistic risks. Rabies is present in Bali, so any animal bite requires immediate treatment.

A scooter is essentially mandatory. Gojek and Grab bikes are cheap but some areas have informal local-driver arrangements that block app pickups. Pavements are rare and the main road has no shoulder.

Tropical monsoon

Dry season from May to September brings consistent sun, lower humidity and the best surf. Wet season means daily afternoon downpours and a much quieter town.
