Rice fields and palms in Pererenan

Pererenan

Where people move when Canggu gets too much, and rice fields still exist.

About

Pererenan is the northern edge of the Canggu sprawl and still has the rice fields, the quiet lanes and the sense of a village that Batu Bolong lost. It has picked up its own cafes and a couple of coworking options, so you are no longer isolated, but you are ten to fifteen minutes from the centre of things. It suits people on a second or third Bali stay who already have their circle and want to sleep somewhere calm.

Biznet fibre is good where installed, typically 50-200 Mbps. Many villas advertise fibre but run a shared 4G router, so test before committing. Power cuts of an hour or two happen most weeks, which is why coworking spaces with generators are popular.

Meeting people

There is something on every night: founder dinners, pitch evenings, run clubs, sound baths, surf sessions. The community skews toward e-commerce, agencies, coaching, content and crypto rather than engineering.

Extremely easy to meet people, harder to keep them: the average stay is measured in weeks.

Common scams

  • Scooter rental damage claims for existing scratches

  • Villa deposits taken by agents who do not control the property

  • Police stops targeting foreigners without an international driving permit

  • Unlicensed money changers with rigged counting

Women travellers

Very comfortable and one of the most female-friendly nomad hubs anywhere, with a large women-in-business community.

LGBTQ+

Bali is relatively relaxed and Canggu especially so, though Indonesia's national laws are conservative.

Theft from unlocked villas and scooter accidents are the realistic risks. Rabies is present in Bali, so any animal bite requires immediate treatment.

Public system

Not a realistic option for foreigners.

Private care

Local clinics handle routine issues, cuts, infections and reef scrapes competently. Anything serious means BIMC or Siloam in Denpasar, roughly an hour away, or evacuation to Singapore.

Insurance

Medical evacuation cover is the priority here, not routine care. Confirm motorbike riding is covered and that you hold the licence your policy requires.

Air quality

Generally clean, though traffic fumes on the main roads and seasonal rubbish burning are noticeable.

Dry season from May to September brings consistent sun, lower humidity and the best surf. Wet season means daily afternoon downpours and a much quieter town.

  • You will ride for everything social

  • Development is arriving fast; what is quiet now may not stay so
