Canggu went from a strip of surf shacks to the highest concentration of remote workers anywhere in roughly a decade, and the infrastructure has not caught up. What you get is unmatched: coworking spaces with a genuine startup atmosphere, a beach for sunset every day, gyms and yoga at a standard you would pay triple for in Europe, and a social calendar that fills itself. What you also get is a two-lane road carrying ten times the traffic it was built for, rents that have doubled since 2020, and a village that locals increasingly cannot afford. It remains the fastest place in the world to build a network from nothing, which is why people keep coming despite the honest complaints of everyone already there.

Berawa is the most developed strip, with the newest villas, the best gyms and the worst traffic. Batu Bolong is the original core, walkable in parts, closest to the surf and the cafes, and correspondingly expensive. Pererenan to the north is where people move to escape the crowds, quieter and greener but a ride from everything. Beyond that, Seseh and Nyanyi are the next frontier and already filling up.

Canggu is no longer cheap. Eating at warungs and renting from a local landlord keeps costs low, but the cafe-and-brunch version of Canggu costs more than Lisbon. Long villa leases are usually paid twelve months up front, which is the single biggest cash-flow shock for newcomers.

Biznet fibre is good where installed, typically 50-200 Mbps. Many villas advertise fibre but run a shared 4G router, so test before committing. Power cuts of an hour or two happen most weeks, which is why coworking spaces with generators are popular.

Extremely easy to meet people, harder to keep them: the average stay is measured in weeks.

Theft from unlocked villas and scooter accidents are the realistic risks. Rabies is present in Bali, so any animal bite requires immediate treatment.

A scooter is essentially mandatory. Gojek and Grab bikes are cheap but some areas have informal local-driver arrangements that block app pickups. Pavements are rare and the main road has no shoulder.

Dry season from May to September brings consistent sun, lower humidity and the best surf. Wet season means daily afternoon downpours and a much quieter town.
