Destination Thailand Visa

Introduced in July 2024, the DTV is the visa Thailand should have had a decade earlier. It is valid for five years, allows unlimited entries, and each entry grants 180 days, extendable once in-country by another 180. There are two qualifying tracks: the 'workcation' track for remote employees, freelancers and business owners working for entities outside Thailand, and a soft-power track for people coming to study Muay Thai, Thai cooking, or receive medical treatment. It does not permit working for Thai employers or clients, and it is not a residence permit or a path to permanent residency.

Broadly open, but consulates assess each application case by case.

• Health insurance recommendedAdvisoryInsurance is not formally mandated for the DTV, but some consulates ask for it and going without it in Thailand is a poor bet.
• Apply from outside ThailandInfoThe DTV must be applied for through the Thai e-Visa portal from outside Thailand. You cannot convert a tourist entry into a DTV while in the country.
• No work for Thai employers or clientsInfoThe DTV does not come with a work permit. Taking on Thai clients, working for a Thai company, or being paid by a Thai entity requires a separate work permit.

1. Prepare financial evidence

   ~90 days

   Build a three-to-six month bank statement history showing a stable balance above THB 500,000. Consulates look at the average, not a one-day spike.

2. Apply on the Thai e-Visa portal

   Submit through thaievisa.go.th, selecting the consulate covering your country of residence. Processing quality varies noticeably between consulates.

3. Wait for approval

   ~21 days

   Most approvals land in two to four weeks. Some consulates request additional documents mid-review.

4. Enter Thailand

   ~1 day

   Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours of arrival and enter. Immigration stamps you in for 180 days.

One 180-day extension per entry at an immigration office for THB 1,900. After that you leave and re-enter, which resets the 180-day clock for the remaining life of the visa.

• Consulate discretion is real: Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur and Taipei have reputations that shift every few months, so check recent reports before choosing where to apply
• Keep the THB 500,000 in the account for several months rather than parking it there the week before you apply
• Spouses and children under 20 can apply as dependants on the same visa
• The 180-day extension is granted at the officer's discretion and is not guaranteed
• Freelancers with thin documentation are the most common rejection profile
• Holding a DTV does not exempt you from the tax-residency threshold
